2024 Ashdown Examination and USNCO Schedule for NESACS
- Registration for the 2024 Ashdown will open early December, 2023.
- The NEW EXTENDED registration closes on February 24, 2024 for the Ashdown and the USNCO!
- Note: although any high school student (grades 9 – 12) registered at a school in the NESACS region may participate in the Ashdown competition, the USNCO has more restrictions. All students should read the rules and eligibility requirements on the USNCO website.
- The Ashdown is fully digital for 2024. Participants must choose one of the available Date/Times to sit for the Ashdown, however, each participant may choose their own location to sit for the Ashdown, as the procotoring is also remote.

2024 Ashdown Information
December 2023
- Pre-registration of participants opens.
- All participants must be pre-registered by a teacher/administrator at their school.
- Once pre-registered, participants must complete the registration process (instructions will be sent via email).

The NEW registration form for the new USNCO has closed for the 2024 Olympiad.

Note: All Ashdown registrants must also be registered using the new USNCO Registration Form. Only participants registered for the Ashdown need to be registered with the USNCO. No students attending school in the geographical region defined as the Northeastern Section of the American Chemical Society (NESACS), including homeschooled students, will be able to sit for the USNCO unless they are nominated by NESACS based on the results of the Ashdown Examination.
27 January and on-going
- Participants monitor email diligently for instructions from usnco@acs.org and adcrosby@nshs-science.net. (Make sure to check your spam folder!)
Late March 2024
The Avery Ashdown Exam Date/Times for testing.
- Dates/Times:
- Wednesday, March 20, 2024 from 7:00 to 8:50 PM ET
- Saturday, March 23, 2024 from 10:00 to 11:50 AM ET
- Sunday, March 24, 2024 from 3:00 PM to 4:50 PM ET
- Platform: the Ashdown will be a digital exam, however, the platform is still TBA
- Registered participants should watch for announcements about the requirements for taking the digital exam.
TBA in late March
- NESACS will notify nominees for the USNCO. This is the date established by the USNCO, and is much earlier than in previous years!
13 – 21 April
National Exam (USNCO) possible dates.
- Date/Time: NESACS sitting of the USNCO is still TBA
- Location: NESACS sitting of the USNCO is still TBA
- The 2024 USNCO will be entirely in-person – no part of it will be digital or online.
June 2 – 14
- Study Camp for top 20 – all parts are in-person.

Students seeking study materials — past Ashdown examinations — would be best served by accessing the past Local Section Examinations directly from USNCO. As the examinations changed somewhat a few years back, exams starting in 2015 will be most similar to future exams.
