Summary of Scores

As each term completes, the Cumulative Total for the Semester will update. Included in this WebScores summary view is the total number of points earned by term, the percentage score by term, the grade earned by term, and a projection for the semester-end course grade based on the term percentage grade to date. Note that when all is complete, each term will count equally toward your grade for the chemistry component of Cooking is Chemistry.

Assignment Descriptions

Scores are recorded in five major categories:

  • Attendance and Participation
Attendance is required. Arrivial in the appropriate room (kitchen or chem lab), prepared to work, before each class begins is expected. Active participation in group work, engagement during in-class discussions, and meaningful participation in outside projects are considered in the assignment of a participation grade. Point value is placed on students who are always present (on time), actively engaged, and well-behaved for all class periods. Only one attendance and participation grade is issued at the end of each term.
  • Tests and Quizzes
At this time you should plan on one test per term. Tests are usually 100 points, and will be written to take 40 minutes, although 55 minutes will be allotted. The focus material for each test will be made clear in advance of the test. Quizzes are designed to take 10 minutes, and are generally 20 or 25 points; quizzes will be given as needed. Quizzes will usually be announced several days in advance, however, this is not a promise. The focus on quizzes can be over a portion of a unit, or over the entire unit as preparation for an upcoming test.
  • Chemistry Laboratory Work
Chemistry laboratory assignments are all forms of assignments pertaining to laboratory work done in the chemistry lab, plus any points given for safety inspections and workspace clean-up. Assignments may include in-class group work and other in-class assignments, pre- and post- laboratory assignments, chemical laboratory data sheets and prepared report forms.
  • Kitchen Laboratory Work
Kitchen laboratory assignments are all forms of assignments pertaining to laboratory work done in the kitchen lab, plus any points given for safety inspections and workspace clean-up. Assignments may include in-class group work and other in-class assignments, pre- and post- laboratory assignments, kitchen laboratory data sheets and prepared report forms.
  • Projects
Projects are introduced in class, but have a significant component that must be completed outside of class. Some projects require a presentation in class that may be an oral presentation with supporting materials, or a poster presentation. Each project has a complete description, an articulated timeline, and a rubric by which the project is graded. Point value is placed on adherence to the project grading rubric, and also to adherence to the stated timeline.
